- A large number of different labour division types can be found in the construction of a bee colony; we can separate the following types among the worker bees according to their tasks: guards, nurses, cleaners, nectar collectors, propolis collectors, pollen collectors, builders, explorers. The members of the family can be worker bees, queens or drones.
- The natural reproduction of the bee families is called swarming. Before swarming the growing up of a queen takes place in the bee family and then a part of the workers of the crowded beehive take on honey and starts working at the hatching of the young queen. First of all, they usually sit on a branch of a tree and then they continue their way to the new "home" explored and occupied by the explorer bees. In the meantime, the new queen hatches in the old family and then it copulates and their life continues.
- The explorer bees "tell" their partners the direction and the distance of the meadow by dancing around after flying back to the beehive. They give flavour and scent sample from the nectar.
- The guard bees are not allowed to let other bees from different beehives into the beehive guarded and protected by them. Each beehive has its own scent which is checked by the guard bees. They eventually touch their partners coming home with their antennas.
- Important instruments of the communication in the bee family is the pheromone (scent) emitted by the members of the family and the other is their antennas.
- The queen keeps the bee family together and its presence is felt by each bee in the beehive as the queen emits a certain pheromone continuously, which can be felt by the bees. The death of the queen is recognized by the bees after ca. an hour and the connective force weakens. After that the bees endeavour to substitute the queen by growing up a new queen.
- The attacking bee protects primarily its piled stocks and it attacks to protect it. As soon as the first bee stings the others start the attack because they feel the bee poison and pheromone emitted into the air and it also encourages the other members of the family to attack.
- For bees the cells are both storage area and cradle. The location of the nest determines the place of storage. There is always proper hygiene, order and clean conditions in the beehives.
- There may be 50, 000-80,000 bees in a beehive depending on the season and the development of the family.
There is usually one queen, several workers and few drones in a beehive.
