HONEY

"Protect your health with Hungarian honey from the producer because honey is not only a nutrient but also a medicine."

General facts on honey:

At the excavation of the Pyramids of Egypt, the archaeologists came across unspoilt honey in many burial chambers. Beyond the wonder of "preserving its quality 3,000 years long", it also refers to the fact that it has already been well-known and consumed by humankind in the ancient period. Apiary was a usual activity in the monasteries of the Middle Ages, and it became popular in Hungary after the foundation of the religious orders. Honey belongs to the comestibles. Honey is the present of nature. To collect 1 kg honey, bees visit ca. 3 million flowers collecting nectars annually. During the visit of flowers, they cover such a long distance that a bee could fly around the Earth six times. Honey is not only sweet but contains necessary nutrients for our bodies. Honey is made of the nectars collected by bees from flowers and it is matured to be final product by bees. The basic ingredient of honey is the nectar which is produced in a liquid format in the nature as a result of the secretion activity of plants in the flowers.
Of course, its main ingredients are sugars and water. Honey contains approx. 190 nutrients: mainly 19 amino acids, 33 minerals, 11 vitamins, enzymes and trace elements.
It is important to know that sugars in honey are natural sugars that can be found in the nature. These sugars are not "produced" by chemical processes. Furthermore, water included honey goes through a double filtration process before getting in honey. One of the filters is the plant where the nectar stems from. The other filter is the bee itself which extracts water from the nectar during the maturation of the nectar. The quantity of the natural sugars found in honey (carbohydrates) is around 80%, depending on the type of honey. The ratio of water fluctuates usually around 18%. There are also proteins in honey. In addition, honey contains minerals. Each type of honey has different content of minerals and the ratio of natural sugars is also different, depending on which type of flower the bees collected the nectars from. Honey has various characteristics, depending on its origin. Their colours, flavours, scents, aromas and content may vary on the types of plants or other fluids with sugar content, where the bees collected the ingredients of honey from.
The colour of honey can range from the transparent or snow-white crystal colour through yellow, yellowish brown, greenish yellow, russet colours to coffee brown as well as black, in an extremely large number of tones.
Regarding its flavour, different types of honey have different flavours: from pleasant, flower-scented, aromatic, sweet to sour, a bit bitter or even very unpleasant. The colour, flavour, aroma of honey may be considerably influenced by the storage conditions, the duration of storage, the storage instruments and the materials stored together with honey.

Which type of honey is good? Matured honey produced by bees can be preserved over an unlimited period of time. Its crystallization is a natural process, despite the several misbelieves and false information. Crystallized honey can be restored into its original condition by warming it up continuously at 40 or max. 45 C degrees (e.g. in a pot filled with water).
It is worth storing honey in a cool, dark and dry place. It is recommended to maintain temperature about15 C degrees. To prevent the counterfeiting of honey, a standard for honey was compiled. In addition, honey is protected by labels from 2008. Honey is made by bees. The "label" of honey from the producer is the name, the address and it is also the label from 2008. As the saying goes, "One beehive equals ten doctors".
Honey is a rich source of energy due to the natural sugar content that is absorbed easily. At the same time it is not fattening as fruit-sugar is stored in the liver as glycogen in the liver and glucose are used by the muscles quickly. It is extremely rich in B1, B2, B3, B8 and B6 vitamins and besides, it contains calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc and many natural antioxidants protecting us from the free radicals that stem from the metabolism and the defence of the body against bacteria. Its healing effects are not only confirmed by scientific researches but the experience of the folk. Beyond being an effective medicine against flu, sore throat and coughing, it strengthens the immune system, supports the recovery process after illnesses and helps us regaining the mental and physical energy due to its composition. Thanks to the nutrients included in honey, the cells utilize oxygen in a more efficient way, so the capacity can be increased. In case of bruises, the oedema tends to left the tissues quickly; the honey rinses the wound, stimulates healing of wounds and kills bacteria due to its antimicrobial composition and its ability to produce hydrogen peroxide. Thanks to this characteristic, it does not cause tooth decay compared to the refined sugars, moreover, it protects the dental enamel from the harmful bacteria. Honey is a special nutrient that had been the only sweetener for a long time.
